Funcle Matt and Miss Jane

Well, we finally made it to Virginia after nearly missing our flight. Our bags came on the flight after ours (that’s a whole other story...) but the fact that we weren’t delayed an extra four hours was a great relief. Unfortunately, our camera was packed in the bags that were delayed those extra hours, so I didn’t get any fun pictures of our greetings with Grandma and Grandpa, or our (not-so-brief) stay at Chik-Fil-A (I spend way too much time there). Grandma met us in the airport with big hugs and lots of smiles, and Grandpa picked us up after he picked up a car seat we borrowed (mine was on the way, part of that “other story”...) for the day. We headed to everyone’s favorite chicken restaurant and got lunch. My brother met us there along with a couple of other friends from my home town. My brother...Funcle Matt. You see, he’s a “fun uncle.” close-up-matt2.jpg Saturday we prepared for a dinner with Matt and his girlfriend, Jane. We got food ready, set the table, and cleaned up our mess (it looked like a tornado hit my parents’ living room with our stuff everywhere). Michaela loves to do this kind of thing, and appreciates the aesthetic element of having company over. michaela-table2.jpg Christian also loves to help; Grandma gave him a job... dusting2.jpg Eliana was also very busy. in-tray2.jpg finger-tray2.jpg ball-under-desk2.jpg leading-grandpa2.jpg snowman2.jpg eliana-dancing2.jpg It wasn’t all work for everyone else and fun and games for Eliana... christian-grandma2.jpg leaping-christian2.jpg christian-grandma-fun1.jpg grandma-hugs1.jpg loving-grandma1.jpg The anticipation rose as the time for Uncle Matt to arrive got nearer. The kids couldn’t wait for him to get there. who-is-it1.jpg Even Eliana was there, waiting to see who was going to come in through the door. uncle-matt-arrives.jpg And Jane is with him... matt-jane.jpg One of the first things Matt noticed was this... table-for-two.jpg He said,“Is that for Jane and me?” He’s so silly. matt-table.jpg He’s not quite the right size... He is quite a storyteller, and the kids are always a captive audience. He saw a book on the couch, The Wizard of Oz, and told the kids how Frank Baum came up with the name for his famous city. They were entranced. wizard-of-oz.jpg I have to say, so was I. Matthew isn’t the only one who can captivate an audience, though. Michaela did a little entertaining too. michaela-piano.jpg And captivated audience... audience.jpg Uncle Matt can get Christian really crazy. He likes to do so right before he walks out of the door and goes home. But this time I gave them permission to do the “silly face” before the “good picture.” two-silly-faces.jpg guys.jpg That’s nice, isn’t it? While the boys were being silly, the girls were having some serious discussion on, well, it’s a secret. girl-talk.jpg And Eliana continued to entertain herself. She went from snowman, to Grandpa, to exploring these new surroundings. eliana-snowman.jpg eliana-grandpa-2.jpg recognize.jpg It’s always nice to see something familiar when you’re far from familiar... We were so glad to see Funcle Matt and Miss Jane. The kids had a great time, dinner was wonderful (thanks, Mom), and everyone was exhausted by bedtime! I wish we could see Matt more often, but I’m so grateful for the time that we get to spend with him when we do visit. Distance is a hard thing but somehow our family has a bond that overcomes that obstacle. So, even when we are far from home, we’re still home.

Pack, Man

I am packing for a trip to Virginia.  I am trying to pack light, sorting through everything in order to decide what I really need and what I can do without.  There are some things that are non-negotiable, though.

"Please can I go with you, Mommy?"

How could I say no to that face?

She is so helpful...

I tried to cover up the underwear with a shirt (I am a modest kind of girl, you know), but she kept throwing the shirt back out of the suitcase.

The shirt stays!

"Are you talkin' to me?!"

Maybe I'll get a regular seat after all...

If It's Not Cheese, It's Poop

Okay, okay, I know that isn't true or else this would be one weird world, but it seems like this kind of thing is a recurring theme, no?

If I were to lean over, is this what's on my head?

At this point you may be wondering what I'm talking about.  Or you may know exactly what I'm talking about.  It is this...yet again, I have been pooped upon.  I know!  Can you even believe it?  This time it was a bird.  On my shoulder, and in my hair.  Yuck.  My stomach turns just thinking about it.

Some of you may be thinking,"How can that gross her out so much?  Didn't she just put a picture of her daughter's poopie on this website?"  Yes, I did.  But it's so, so, so different!  I am not related to the bird, the bird did not grow in my womb for nine months, I did not deliver that bird into this world and nurture it for over a year.  And the bird, obviously, has no regard for me.

I'm trying to figure out what lesson I'm supposed to be learning.  Humility?  A love for all creatures regardless of their actions?  A little perspective adjustment?  I'm sure all of those things are true.  Am I thinking about it too much?  Probably.

I think in heaven there will be no cockroaches and other animals will know how to use a toilet.

Won't that be wonderful?

Easy and Cheesy (Oh So Cheesy)

Here is a super-easy, and surprisingly yummy way to get rid of that 5 lb. bag of mozzarella cheese you bought at Sam's the other week.  Oh, you didn't buy 5 lbs. of cheese at once because you're not that silly?  Right, well, I am.  And I've been making individual pizzas for a couple of days.  I'm also using the gyro bread that my son threw in our grocery cart, because he thinks he loves pita bread, only it wasn't pita, it was gyro.

What was I talking about?

Pizza.  Yes, I put the gyro slice (slice?  Not really, more like a piece) on a plate.  Very easy first step, right?  I took a can of tomato sauce (the little ones) and spooned a small amount into a little bowl.  I added some garlic (smashed in a press), a little oregano, a little basil, and a little garlic salt to that sauce and then spread it on my bread.  I took some spinach (and for my oldest daughter, no spinach on hers this time) and broke it into little pieces and sprinkled it all around.  Then I covered it up with mozzarella and popped it into my oven at 400 degrees (how do I make a degrees symbol?  Anyone...anyone?) for about 12 minutes.  It was great!  And so simple!  Those two things together make me so happy.  I wish I had a picture of my pretty pizza, with a little red sauce around the edges and the green spinach sticking out here and there and the melty, golden mozzarella.  Yum

I'm happy to take suggestions about what to do with that mozzarella.  Seriously, I have about three lbs. left.  And that's a lot of cheese.

I just realized how much I've written on cheese lately.  I really don't have a problem.  It's just occupying my thoughts the last couple of days.  I wonder what that does mean.  I don't think I have a problem.  Maybe I should talk to someone about it.

Knock knock.

Who's there?

Cheese.

Cheese who?

Cheese finally lost her mind!

Another Poem

Cheese

Sometimes white and sometimes yellow,

Sometimes mild and mellow,

Other times it can be strong,

I cannot go for long

Without this tasty stuff.

Enchiladas, pizza, soups-enough, enough, enough!

It's sure to please,

Go have some cheese,

Except for those

For whom lactose

Causes indigestion,

Please ignore above suggestion.
