Can I quote you on that?

This conversation transpired on the way home from Christian's soccer game tonight.  We left right after the game was over, apparently in a strange kind of hurry. Michaela:  Are we meeting daddy or something? Me:  No...I just need to get home and get dinner started. Michaela:  I know what would be faster... Me:  What?  Getting some fast food?  (little laugh)  It would also cost more money. Michaela:  What is money compared to time? Seriously, where does she get this stuff?

Some people call our neck of the woods the "buckle of the Bible belt."  There is a church on every corner, all different denominations. There are other things that stand out here, though, that I've been waiting for questions about, while hoping they wouldn't come ever yet. We were driving along and Michaela says,"'Condoms To Go'?  What is that?" I think I said,"Hmmm...A kind of store..." And the following is, no joke, exactly how the rest of the conversation went: Michaela:  What kind of store?  Is it a lunch store? Me:  No. Michaela:  Is it a scuba diving store? Me:  No. Michaela:  Is it a safety store? Me:  Kind of. And then she said something to Christian and never mentioned it again.  Whew.

"Here, give them to me!  I'm really good at tying and untying...(slight pause)not to brag or anything, but..." -Michaela, regarding undoing the laces on Christian's cleats

Michaela and Christian both want so much to help with the move.  However, they ended up fighting over who was going to pull the hand truck across the porch to the truck.  Each one wants to do it on their own.

Michaela managed to get a hold of it and started heading out the door.  As she went out, holding the door open herself, pulling the hand truck behind her, she said vehemently,"I'm not doing it by myself!"

Mom and I looked at one another and laughed.  I suppose she had an imaginary army helping her out?

I couldn't sleep tonight because I was lying in bed thinking of what I could do with the kids tomorrow while this move is going on.  I got up and told my mom about an idea I had for making a frame to go around one of the bathroom mirrors, to give it a little color.  She looked at me and said,"You want to make a frame to go around it, like with nails?"  I was like,"Yeah!"  She said right back,"Don't you need a miter box or something?"

A miter box?  How does she know about miter boxes?

Ah!  She does watch a lot of HGTV.

"Why does this man say that men are from Mars and women are from Venus?"

-Michaela, upon discovering the book Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus on our bookshelf this evening.

I was trying to distract Christian tonight while we waited for our pizza to arrive (he was so hungry), so I asked him if he would like to see me do some ballet (sorry, no video).  He gave me a half-smile and nodded his head, so I did an amazing leap (think MAD TV, "Look what I can do" guy) and a pirouetteish kind of move.  Michaela burst out laughing and Christian smiled.  He said,"Is that really ballet?"  I walked across the living room saying,"I seriously doubt it."  Then I headed back toward Christian and executed another (not) stunning and graceful move, and finished with my hands up in the air (think "Superstar!" or the "Y" of "YMCA") and one foot back behind me, bent knee in front.  (I know you have a good visual.)  I looked at him and said,"Do you think that was [really ballet]?"  He shook his head and replied,"That was karate."

I didn't know I was so talented.

We were driving home tonight from being out and we passed our new house, dark and unoccupied as of yet.  I said, a little tongue-in-cheek,"Are we ever going to live there?"

Michaela answered,"Yes, but you know, Daddy's been working on his dissertation, and we've been all wound up in other things..."

That really made me chuckle.  "...all wound up in other things"?  Where do they get this stuff?!

I went out to lunch with some of the other pastors' wives today; there were eight of us total.  We enjoyed a very nice meal and the waiter gave us the rundown of dessert choices as he cleared our plates away.  Two kinds of cheesecake, tiramisu, chocolate...we all declined dessert, however.  He looked around at all of us and said incredulously,"A table of eight ladies, and no chocolate?!"  What a good question!

Imagine Christian saying this with all of the enthusiasm mixed with incredulity he had in him...

"Do I really make you smile?!"

as his immediate response to a little girl's Valentine in his bag today at the class party.

Michaela and I were driving today and we noticed some more signs that say "Welcome Home George and Laura".  She asked me if George and Laura (she is on a first name basis with them, you know) were already back home.  I said I really didn't know, but we should call Grandma (Vicki) because she would probably know.  Michaela said knowingly,"Yeah, because she watches the news!"  Grandma is a news nut.  Apparently this has not gone unnoticed.  It was pretty funny.  And if you know my mom, then it's even funnier.  I love it that my kids know their grandparents well, even though far away.
