I kind of think that "far away" grand parents might spend more quality time with the kids than close by grandparents. My MIL lives in town and we see her every few weeks for a few hours with the kids running in and out because they don't look at it as a special occasion.
When we visit with my parents who are 500 miles away, it feels like and event and we spend all our time together.
