Christmas-y

We began our Christmas season with the Advent Festival at our church.  This special evening included Christian's choir singing along with a living nativity and the Christmas story.

Christian is on the bottom row, all the way to the right.  He was quite funny to watch; it was very sweet to hear the choir singing Advent carols.  They all did a wonderful job and were rewarded in the end...

Eliana was eyeing Christian's cookie.

She was excited to be there, and did a little dance.

While we do have a third child, she was flitting about with her friends.

Speaking of cookies...the kids really wanted to make Christmas cookies this year.  So, we rolled out the dough and brought out the cookie cutters and I even made frosting for them.  They had such a blast decorating these cookies!  They pretty much did it all by themselves.

They also had fun making snowflakes.  I don't know if they have ever done this before or not, but it seemed new and exciting to them.  They enjoyed coming up with creative ways to cut their paper and make the snowflake designs.  It took a couple of tries to figure out how to get roundish ones rather than square ones.

Eliana must be involved in all things, everywhere...

Our next project was to put up our Christmas tree.  Our tree this year is made out of paper, which in turn was made out of a tree.  So, in the end it is a tree.

Every Christmas tree needs ornaments...

They loved decorating this tree, and worked well together.  They were putting up the lights.  This is the first year our tree has had colored lights!

The angels, of course...

At the heart of the season...

And here's something that's always fun (or sometimes fun, or maybe not at all, but everyone gets sweaty trying and in the end you hope you have something that was worth all that time and energy).  This year, taking our Christmas picture was relatively simple, and the kids had fun with it.

Look at all these cute toes...

Smiles are contagious, no?

Looking back at these pictures it seems like Christmas is all about the kids.  In some ways that is very true.  They find so much joy in little things, in the anticipation, in the remembering, in being together, in meaningful work, and in eating cookies!  Looking at these pictures also makes me realize how much I need to learn from their example, and allow the beauty of Christmas to affect me.  It's simple for them.  May it be so always.

A Mixed Bag

I have to be honest...tonight ended on a slightly sour note.  Things were going along just fine, and then all of a sudden, minutes before bedtime--KAPOW, BANG, KERPLUNK!  Something ugly got a hold of us, and I sent the kids to bed all in a hurry so that I could go start a load of laundry and shed a couple of tears and then be just fine.  (Sigh)

They are in the bedroom now, quietly talking, while I sit here thinking about my own struggles as I try to be a good example for them and fail each day at least one (hundred) time(s)...  and at the same time I am thinking about how for the last two weeks they have been listening non-stop to Christmas carols, reading about them in some very neat books we have about hymns, playing so nicely together (today, for hours), and cleaning up after themselves.  I love listening to them sing along with the carol CD.  It makes my heart swell when I hear their sweet voices sing things like,"While shepherds watched their flocks by night, all seated on the ground...The angel of the Lord came down, and glory shone around.  And glory shone around."  And if you could hear the lovely music in the background, the bagpipes and other instruments along with their voices, you would know why it affects me the way it does.

So, there are these two sides, right?  The wonderful, grace-filled picture of the children (even Eliana will dance and move her arms so sweetly to the music) singing praises to our Lord.  The nasty, crazy ending to an otherwise very pleasant day which leaves a bad taste in my mouth and makes me want to eat a brownie to get rid of it.  This just leads me to affirm my belief that, indeed, I need a Savior, and praise the Lord, One has come.

Advent...a season of preparing.  I'm going to go tell them that I love them.

Friday

The middle of November is upon us!  How can it be?  I think I'm in a time warp.  Or a vortex.  Or a black hole.  Maybe a vacuum?  Please don't mention "vacuum" again, okay?  I'm just trying to post here!  Oh, that's right, I brought that up.

What was I saying?  November 14th.  Friday, November 14th.  And we are just as busy as ever (and still not managing to get much done-what is that phenomenon called?).  We began our day by getting Christian to school and then heading out to Eliana's swim lesson.  Except it's actually a float lesson, because she's too little to get the edge of the pool and get out.  But float lesson sounds kind of weird, so I still say swim lesson.  This was her third week.  That sounds wrong, but it's not.  She has done an amazing job and has a great float.  She doesn't like the lessons at all; several of my friends have asked that question.  But the point is that she will know what to do if she happened to fall into a body of water without an adult around.  I know, when would she be away from me?  But accidents happen all the time and drowning scares me out of my mind.  Our two older kids went throught the same program in Kentucky, and it was impressive.  We had a pool there, so it was even more urgent that they knew how to rescue themselves.  Fortunately we never needed to test out the skills in an emergency.  They are both great swimmers now, though, and I love knowing that they are equipped.

Back to Eliana's swimming (floating!)...our instructor is very gentle and kind.  She never throws Eliana into the water, she moves slowly and deliberately in order to help Eliana know exactly what is expected of her.  And Eliana got it right away.

The first thing Sheri does is put her on her back.  What is interesting to me is that every child I've seen do this has his or her own "style" of float.  Eliana is pretty still, and her toes are pointed up to the sky.  She makes little fists.  She's not very relaxed, but she can keep herself floating for a good period of time.  She has figured out that if she ducks her chin, her mouth goes under the water, so the key is to keep her head back.  She corrects herself quickly if she does look down for some reason.  Sheri flips her gently, and immediately Eliana heads back around so that she is on her back.

It's almost funny to watch because she starts to turn over onto her back before she is even under the water fully.  She knows what she is supposed to do and does not want to be under water face down any longer than necessary.

She has floated near the wall (which freaks some kids out), near the steps, around the jet, and next to the instructor.  She maintains her float all the time.  She has been on the wall, and Sheri let her plop into the water...

and she immediately (you can see her starting to roll around even before she's left the wall) turns onto her back.

She works very hard during her lessons (which are super short because of their intensity), and I'm proud of her.  Even though she has no idea why she has to go through this.

She recovers pretty quickly, but she's always very tired.  Every day after the lesson on the drive home she falls asleep.  It is 30 minutes away, and she just konks right out.  Today, oddly enough, she noticed that Michaela had crackers in the car and she wanted some, so she stayed awake the whole way back to our house.

Happy with cracker...

 I love this girl's toes!

And this one...I can't keep her from reading in the car!  I'm afraid she's going to throw up or something, but she says she won't!

She's a trooper.  She goes along for the drive, sits throught the lesson, and then the drive back home.  She never complains about it.

I got gas on the way home, and while I was standing at the pump I read the warning sign that's posted on the side, just because.  It said...

I'm so glad that I had that warning before I did something really stupid.  I'm prone to, you know.

When we get home from the lessons, I give Eliana a bath to rinse off all that chlorine.  Today, Michaela took it upon herself to do the whole thing almost entirely on her own.

Ironically, ever since her swimming lessons started, Eliana has loved her bath much more than ever before.  She cries when we get her out.  (I have to tell you, I almost accidentally wrote "dries" instead of "cries" but it totally would have made sense.  Isn't that funny.  Hilarious, I  know.)

We finally were able to get to some schoolwork; Michaela did some Math first.

Eliana ate a little cereal, did a little drawing, and then she was ready to go!

So, I'm sad to say that Math got interrupted by a dance party.

Too bad it's Friday, because these girls have Saturday night fever!

Finally we were able to get back to Math; I gave Eliana a drink, and Michaela got one too.  Please, someone tell me, am I missing something here?

And Eliana is into experiments...she is working on "you can't put a round peg in a square hole."

Sorry, that wasn't so funny.  She is, though.  She finally petered out and had to take a nap.

And Michaela and I moved on to Grammar and Writing.

While Eliana was napping (in her own bed, not on my lap!), the kids had some down time.  Michaela read a book, Christian played a computer game, and I wrote a letter!  It was so nice.  The house was pretty quiet, and everyone was content with what they were doing.  It was a lovely moment.

Once Eliana woke up, we headed to the playground.  It was a gorgeous afternoon.  And the kids had so much fun.  There are a lot of pictures here, so look if you want, or don't!

Mike returned home from out-of-town shortly after we finished dinner, and just in time for getting-ready-for-bed.  He had hardly gotten in the door before Christian was eagerly sharing some of the things he had made for Dad's Night (www.fivewalkers.com/).

We finished up with a silly book read by Daddy, and then off to bed.  I think that sounds like a great idea myself.  See you all tomorrow!

Thursday Part I

"Today" began at 5:30 for Eliana and me.  I almost took a picture of the clock as well as some photots of that crazy girl playing while it was still dark outside.  She was actually up around 5:00, crying.  I ended up getting her and she didn't go back to sleep right then.  So, there we were in the schoolroom, checking out the myriad rubber animals we have that were strewn about on the floor.  She is a little scared of most of them (they are about as big as the palm of her hand) so it is kind of funny to watch her with them.  She scowls and scoots her foot away if they "approach" her.

She finally went back to sleep for about 20 minutes and then we were all getting up and getting Christian ready for school.  He got there right at 8:15, which is great.  So Michaela and I were supposed to start in on some schoolwork, but alas, I was having trouble focusing my eyes on any one particular object.  And Eliana was ready for another nap.  Michaela settled down on the couch to read and Eliana and I dozed a little (for better or for worse) in our "green chair."  This nap, too, was short-lived, and Eliana was awake with her feet on the floor after about 30 minutes.  I had a little breakfast (second breakfast, in fact) and then we all got dressed in "regular" clothes.  (I think I'll see how many times I am able to use quotes in this post.)

We went into the schoolroom and Michaela had some trouble focusing on the task at hand (either getting dressed or getting started on her work).  And I have to admit, I was lackluster in my own attempts to "get down to business."  We watched Eliana play with her loopity ball blower:

which I have to confess is pretty funny.  She realized recently what happens when you put your face right over the hole that the balls pop out.  I wish I had been able to get a couple of pictures of expressions that just happened too fast.  But you get the drift.

As I said, Michaela read about 100 books this morning.  Well, not really, but she had a lot of fun tearing through some of the Magic Tree House books.  She likes the stories (they are amusing tales of adventure) and she also likes that she can read one book quite quickly.  Here are the ones she's read since yesterday!

She also checked out the next American Girl book about Kit Kittredge and enjoyed reading that today as well.

I love to read myself (I am an open book, you know).  That's a joke, I mean that I also like to read, so it makes me SO happy that she loves to read too.  She's likely to pull down any number of the books we get for history and read through them, or sections of them, as well as "fun" stories.

Eliana continues to be one busy girl.  Her calendar is full from the beginning of each day to the very end.  She is very "climby" these days, and this is what I caught her doing when I went from the living room into the kitchen to throw something in the trash and then back into the living room:

She remains one of the funniest little things I've seen.   I said,"How big is Eliana?" and she threw her hands up in the air.  That last picture cracks me up.  Does anyone remember me saying she's persistent?  Hmmm...still so.

Eliana has also begun pretending with toys.  She will take a toy muffin and pretend bite it, then offer me some.  She also "feeds the baby."  It is so fun and sweet to watch.

She has a spoon at the baby's mouth here.

This is often how I put her into her own high chair; she learns a lot from my example.

She has a plan, and the baby has to take another seat...

It seemed like a good idea...

but as nimble as she is, she couldn't quite figure this one out.

She did run out of steam and at 2:00 I was able to put her in her bed (with very little fussing about it) and she went to sleep in there instead of on me.  Anyone who knows our crazy sleep habits knows this is a BIG deal.  While she was sleeping I was able to spend some time just with Christian and it was great!  We had fun with a sticker activity book.  He made up a "game" in which he would pull off a bunch of stickers (10 or so) and hand them out to the both of us.  Then we would flip through the pages and he would ask,"Do you see anything on this page," or something similar.  Here are some pictures of that time, and I was taking them myself so please excuse how weird they are.

Christian wanted to get in on the picture-taking action so I let him take a few.  Here is what he did.

We went to the playground; it was a BEAUTIFUL day.  The kids had a blast running around.  We even saw some friends there, which always adds to the fun.

We ended our day at California Pizza Kitchen, where we met some friends for dinner.  Yum!

Due to technical difficulties, this post will be in two parts.  We had a busy, full, exciting, fun day.  Thanks for taking a peek!

(Not So Hidden) Treasure

I just went in to see if Michaela was asleep yet.  I checked on Christian, too, and he was out.  Michaela was all wrapped up in a blanket, so I moved it off of her face (no suffocating, please!) and kissed her forehead.  Without opening her eyes she whispered,"I love you."  I am the richest woman on the planet.
