Can I quote you on that?

I had the kids out tonight on bikes, and Eliana was on her scooter.  At one point she paused beneath some trees and looked with big eyes across the street.  She could hear the cicadas up above and I said,"What is that?"  They kind of freak her out.  She pointed up, and I said,"No, what are they called?"

She looked back at me and said,"Satuhpotatoes."

I almost wet my pants.  What makes this even funnier is that would be how she said "sack of potatoes", if she said such a thing.

Then she looked at me and said,"What is it?"

So I told her,"Cicadas."  She nodded at me with a grin as if to say,"Yes, yes, that's right."  I love that girl.

Eliana was being very loud at dinner, so much so that we couldn't hear ourselves having regular conversation.  She was going back and forth between squealing (just for fun, I suppose) and having a noisy talk with someone only she could see.  Mike looked at her at one point and said firmly, but with a smile,"Ellie!  Zip it!"  She looked at him right in the eyes and shut her lips tightly, then pulled her finger and thumb across the line her lips made and sat with her hands in her lap.  I almost fell out of my chair.  I got myself together because I wanted her to take another bite of her chicken nugget, so I held her fork up to her mouth and sure enough, she put her finger and thumb back up to her lips and unzipped them for the bite.

I do not know where she got this.  But it was too funny.

Things Eliana has said recently...

My pateeter (My computer)

"I need you to get me food."  "What?  Didn't you just eat?"  "I had a donut.  That's not food."

A friend of ours asked her if her stuffed lamb was Mary's and Eliana replied,"No.  It's Eliana's."

Eliana wanted something to eat.  She asked for some cereal and then some yogurt, both of which she had already eaten that morning (it was late morning).  I wondered out loud what time it was, thinking if it were close to lunchtime I could give her some chicken nuggets.  She said,"I'll go check!"  She ran out of the living room and around to the room with a clock in it.  I heard her coming back after a second and she leaned over the end of the couch where I was sitting and  said to me, quite earnestly,"It's time for yogurt."

Eliana was picking out her bathing suit; she wanted the one with flowers on it, like mine.  I laid them out in front of her so she could choose which one she meant (she has more than one with flowers on it) and she pulled out the one she wanted.  She told me,"It's hi-biscuits!"  A.k.a. hibiscus.

As she was putting the bathing suit on, she double-checked about the tag.  It was a two-piece, with shorts and a little rash guard kind of shirt.  She said,"The tad does (like goes) in da bat."  Or "The tag goes in the back."  I love her sweet talking.

Tonight Eliana and I were sitting on the couch and she said,"I haffuh tell you something.  It's a secret."  I leaned over so she could whisper in my ear and she said,"No!  I can't tell you, it's a secret!"

I am reading The Silver Chair (C.S. Lewis) to the kids and tonight I read the chapter in which Eustace, Jill, and Puddleglum have to walk past the giants along a gorge.  The giants eventually begin arguing with one another and they "jeered at one another in long, meaningless words of about twenty syllables each."  The kids thought that was funny and Christian immediately said,"Shummalickawickushamuckalookawuckalashummanastickal."  He ended with a grin.  It was pretty funny.

Quotes from the beach trip:

Wendy returned from the grocery store with some treats, including a package of "fun" cereals (Apple Jacks, Frosted Flakes, Cocoa Krispies...) and her daughter saw them, gasped and said,"Did you give her permission to buy these?!"

Eliana and her cousin were sitting on the floor playing, but she was very fussy.  He looked at her and said,"It's time for you to take a nap!"

I showed Eliana the sign language sign for "I love you" and she immediately made the same sign back at me with her hand.  I said,"Do you know what that means?"  She said,"Yes!  It means,'I love you, Grandpa and Grandma!'"

Eliana and her cousin J. were sitting on the floor coloring.  She looked at him and asked,"Do you like me?"  He said, almost exasperatedly,"Ye-es!"  Then she asked,"Do I like you?"  He responded,"YES!"

Things you might hear from Christian at the beach, but maybe not anywhere else...

"Mom, is this my ball?"

-While playing bocci ball

"I'm getting bitten up by horseshoes!"

-Down on the beach; and replace "horseshoes" with "horseflies" (while it makes more sense, it's not as funny)

Michaela noticed that she had the same cup at dinner two nights in a row; she held it up and said to me in a grand voice,"My destination must be tied to this cup!"

I asked her if she meant her destiny...that was the one.  What a sweet and funny girl.

We were talking in code about milkshakes, so as not to get the kids' hopes up prematurely.  Mike asked my mom if we had enough milk for...and he left it at that.

She said to him,"For coke floats?"

He looked at her and said,"Milk for coke floats?!"

She responded,"I'm tired!"

We do wear her out.

We were leaving and Eliana had three stuffed animals; I told her she could take one.  She picked one and we put the other two next to the door.  I told her they would stay here and take a nap.  She giggled and said,"Yeah, they can snuddle!"

Eliana was on my lap and she looked up at me and said,"You're the tootest."  I'm guessing she meant the cutest.  Which is debatable, I'm sure.

We have a copper-bottomed pot that we don't use very often.  In fact, I don't think I've used it for years.  Mike used it the other night to heat up some beans, and Michaela saw it in the dishwasher and said,"What is that bowl with the rusty bottom?"

I told her it was a pot with a copper bottom.

She said,"So, the stuff that pennies are made of."

I said,"Yes."

She looked at it for a minute and then said,"So, that is worth about $2.00."

Kid on first base:  What ball?
